At the home of Mariah Davis, there are coats — all sorts of coats.
“We have long ones, short ones, ones you can cover up with that are kind of thin, or ones you wear when it’s snowing,” Davis said. We are a family of all different shapes and sizes.”
Davis belongs to the Penbrook Leo Club, a youth affiliate of the Penbrook Lions. this fall, for the first time, the Leos decided to sponsor a coat drive to benefit the homeless and others in need, and Davis is helping to lead it.
Makes me think of the antique coat rack at the bottom of our stairs (old house, you know. No coat closet). Right now, it’s holding two cloth jackets, one Phillies windbreaker, two fleece hoodies, two leather jackets and a bomber jacket, two winter coats (should put those away for the summer sometime soon), and an Irish walking cape. There’s an art to squeezing past the thing with an armload of laundry.
Davis, a sophomore at Central Dauphin East High School, said she thinks it’s “really sad” that some people don’t have coats to keep them warm.
“I’m at my house complaining because I don’t get to watch TV, but there’s people out here without anything,” she said.
These Leos are the only community-based club — not school-based — in Lions’ District 14, club adviser Sarah Clark tells me. they are about two dozen strong and “extremely involved.” they adopted part of the Greenbelt. they write Christmas cards for soldiers and notes for shut-ins. on Oct. 1, they’ll spend their Saturday morning wearing sandwich boards to attract attendees and busing tables to help the Lions hold a successful pancake breakfast and bloodmobile, 7 a.m.-noon at the Penbrook Community Building.
“Our Leos work right beside us,” Clark said. “they just do so much.”
These Leos also help with a critical part of the Lions’ mission — aid for the blind, and support for blindness prevention and research. they help with walks for the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Association, and Davis enjoyed staging a talent show for people with visual impairments.
“There was singing, piano-playing, Hula-Hooping, juggling,” she said. “mostly singing.”
Her work as a Leo has opened her eyes to the challenges faced by people with disabilities.
“I’ve learned not to take what I have for granted and to stop being so unappreciative,” she said. Davis joined Leos a couple of years ago, around the time the club started.
“the Leos club is somewhere you can go and try to help other people and do something with your spare time, something positive,” she said. “You’re not doing anything negative like drugs or something.”
The work is so important that the club is almost self-propelling, with just a bit of guidance from adult advisers, Clark said.
“We told them right from the get-go that Leos is the place to learn leadership and take responsibility, make use of opportunities and learn to be role models to other kids,” she said. “the service part is what keeps them going. the people in need keep them going.”
